2025-09-28 Sermon – Hard Hearts and Empty Rituals

In Zechariah 7, the people ask whether they should continue fasting as they had done for seventy years. God responds with a piercing question: “Was it really for Me that you fasted?” Through Zechariah, the Lord reveals that He desires more than outward rituals—He longs for hearts turned toward Him in repentance. True worship is expressed through justice, mercy, and compassion, not empty ceremonies. The chapter also recalls how the people’s ancestors hardened their hearts and refused to listen, bringing judgment and exile upon themselves. But hidden in this warning is also a call: turn back to God with sincerity, repent from self-centered religion, and walk in His ways of compassion and truth. This vision speaks directly to us today, reminding us that God still calls His people to repent and return to Him with genuine hearts.
