This week we continue reading from the first letter of John, chapter 2. John tells us that if we love this world, we do not have the love of the Father in us. But if God created the world and said it was good according to Genesis, why is it bad to love the world? We learn that what John meant by saying we should not love this world is that we should love the way God intended, and put limits on our desires. Unlimited desire leads to lust and selfish pride, and ultimately to slavery. But self-discipline sets us free from this slavery, which is why it is one of the gifts of the Spirit.
